I learned a couple of disturbing new terms recently: “work martyr” and “vacation shaming.” Like many of you, I have known for some time that many Americans no longer use all of their allotted days off from work, and I have certainly worked with work martyrs in my career. I could deal with that.
However, the idea of vacation shaming is disturbing to me, particularly given its popularity amongst Millennials. Clearly, Millennials do not possess the affinity for work-life balance that we have been led to believe.
With more Millennials moving into management positions and their ranks starting to eclipse other generations in the workplace, we could be headed in a dangerous direction.
There also seems to be quite a disconnect between the signals employees are receiving from their bosses and how their bosses feel about time off. This is definitely something worth discussing within law firms before we end up in an unhealthy situation for workers.
