And you are … ? How to prepare your elevator speech

September 7, 2023

Do you have an elevator speech ready?

An elevator speech, also known as an elevator pitch, is a concise and well-prepared verbal summary or introduction that you can deliver in the time it takes to ride an elevator, typically around 30 seconds to 2 minutes. The goal of an elevator speech is to effectively communicate who you are, what you do, and what you or your organization can offer or achieve in a clear and compelling manner.

Elevator speeches are often used in various professional and networking settings, such as conferences, networking events, job interviews, business meetings, or even casual encounters where you have a brief moment to make a memorable impression. The term “elevator pitch” originates from the idea that you should be able to convey your message within the duration of an elevator ride, making it succinct and attention-grabbing.

Key components of an effective elevator speech typically include:#

  1. Introduction: Start by introducing yourself, mentioning your name and perhaps your current role or affiliation.
  2. Purpose: Clearly state the purpose or objective of your message. What do you want to convey or achieve with this brief conversation?
  3. Value Proposition: Explain what sets you apart or what makes your idea, product, or service unique and valuable. Highlight the benefits or solutions you offer.
  4. Audience-Centric: Tailor your elevator speech to your audience. Consider what might be most relevant or interesting to the person you’re speaking with.
  5. Call to Action: Conclude with a clear and specific call to action, which could be an invitation to learn more, schedule a meeting, or take a specific next step.
  6. Practice: To ensure your elevator speech is effective, practice it until you can deliver it smoothly and confidently without stumbling or going over the time limit.

Here’s a sample of an elevator speech you can adapt for yourself:#

“Hello, I’m [Your Name], a law office administrator with a passion for efficiency in legal practice. With [X] years of experience, I’ve mastered the art of seamlessly managing administrative tasks, so attorneys can focus on winning cases.
