5 Things You Should Get Straight with the Managing Partner

August 16, 2025

One of your most critical relationships is with the managing partner. Having clarity on expectations, priorities, and communication will not only help you thrive but will also keep the entire office running smoothly. Here are five key areas to align on with the managing partner.

1. Office Priorities and Goals

It’s essential to have a clear understanding of the managing partner’s vision and goals for the firm. Whether it’s increasing profitability, enhancing client satisfaction, or improving the efficiency of the office, knowing what the top priorities are will help you align your efforts with the firm’s broader objectives. Regularly discuss upcoming goals and projects to ensure you’re in sync and can proactively support the firm’s needs.

2. Budget Management

Law firm budgets can be complex, and your role involves overseeing various aspects of the firm’s financials, from office supplies to staffing expenses. Make sure you and the managing partner have a shared understanding of how the budget will be allocated, and how you’ll manage expenses throughout the year. This also includes discussing how to handle unexpected costs, identifying areas where cost-cutting might be possible, and setting financial goals for the office.

3. Staffing Needs and Concerns

Staffing is one of the most important areas to manage effectively in a law office. Whether it’s hiring new associates, managing paralegals, or addressing administrative staffing needs, clear communication with the managing partner on staffing priorities is crucial. Discuss upcoming personnel needs, performance issues, and long-term staffing plans. This ensures you’re on the same page about recruitment, retention, and performance management.

4. Technology and Process Improvements

Technology is constantly evolving, and it’s vital to stay up to date with the tools that will keep the office running smoothly. Talk to the managing partner about any planned technology upgrades or process improvements, whether it’s a new case management system, document automation tools, or cybersecurity enhancements. These conversations help set expectations and ensure that the firm’s technology investments align with its goals.

5. Communication Style and Frequency

Finally, establish how and when you’ll communicate with the managing partner. Some managing partners prefer daily check-ins, while others may only want regular updates when necessary. Clarifying this from the start ensures that you can work efficiently without micromanaging or being out of the loop. Additionally, discussing how to handle urgent matters can prevent misunderstandings and keep everything running smoothly.

When you and the managing partner are aligned on these key areas, you’ll foster a strong partnership that benefits the entire firm. Regular communication and clarity on these issues will help you anticipate needs, solve problems more effectively, and contribute to the firm’s success.
